Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 8, "Surrender," revealed some stark hidden truths that retconned the couple's previous appearance in Picard season 1, episode 7, "Nepenthe." Held prisoner on the Shrike, the starship belonging to Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer) and the Changelings, Riker and Troi finally had a heart-to-heart before they were rescued by Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) and Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd). But the revelations in "Surrender" upend what audiences saw in "Nepenthe."
One of the best episodes of Star Trek: Picard season 1, "Nepenthe" saw Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Soji (Isa Briones) seek sanctuary with the Troi-Rikers on the planet Nepenthe, where Will and Deanna moved for the healing properties to help their dying son, Thad Riker. "Nepenthe" revealed the Troi-Rikers' quiet lives in the remote forest world as they raised their teenage daughter, Kestra (Lulu Wilson). The peaceful, homey atmosphere where Will baked bunnycorn pizza and Deanna raised vegetables was the respite Picard and Soji needed before plunging back to save the galaxy from the Romulans. But Star Trek: Picard season 3 now indicates things were not as idyllic for the Troi-Rikers on Nepenthe as they seemed.
