Marvel"s Multiverse Is Avoiding A Big MCU Problem*
So far, the
Marvel Cinematic Universe has managed to sidestep one of the multiverse concept's biggest potential downfalls. The MCU's multiverse was properly introduced in the Disney+ series Loki, before proceeding Phase 4 movies and shows explored it further. Projects such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have used the concept to drive their stories.
Obviously, the idea that there are countless realities in Marvel's world comes with a great deal of storytelling potential. One of these avenues it opens up relates to the re-usage of legacy characters. Since the deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow and the retirement of Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, theories and speculation have arisen stating that Marvel can easily bring them back through the multiverse. And, of course, it's certainly true that the multiverse does indeed avail Marvel with this opportunity.
The Multiverse Saga’s Legacy Characters Come From Other Cinematic Universes

Thus far in the MCU's Multiverse Saga, the only legacy characters that have been used have come from other cinematic universes. Rather than see the return of Chris Evans' Captain America or Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man - characters that played integral roles in the MCU's past - Phase 4 has primarily used characters that had their stories in other universes. From Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning as Spider-Man to Patrick Stewart as Professor X, most Phase 4 legacy characters have not had the opportunity to tarnish previous MCU appearances.
Through including these characters, the fan service and nostalgia element of the inclusions remains the same as if Captain America or Iron Man had returned, only without the potential ruination of prior MCU stories. This only continued with Marvel's usage of the likes of Anson Mount's Black Bolt and Evan Peters' Quicksilver, using lesser-known characters that still utilize the multiverse in arguably better ways. All of these inclusions still adhere to the rules of the MCU's multiverse while also allowing for exciting, crowd-pleasing moments that do not ruin old MCU favorites like Iron Man or Captain America.
The MCU Can't Use Nostalgia Forever

That said, the current approach Marvel is taking in regards to nostalgia isn't sustainable. While legacy characters cropping up throughout the multiverse can be welcome developments, it will likely get to a point where the novelty wears off. With characters like Professor X, for example, the MCU will need its own version at some point rather than banking on the nostalgia of previous iterations.
