That proximity between Marvel and DC blockbusters is not unheard of, though it is rare. The first case of such a head-to-head at the box office for the two comic book giants came in 2011, with the releases of X-Men: First Class and Green Lantern two weeks apart that June. The Marvel film would emerge victorious with $353.6 million against Green Lantern's $220 million box office total.
Then, in November 2017, Marvel and DC would come to face off at the box office again. Two major releases took the stage this time around, with Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok beating the DCEU's team-up film, Justice League. Chris Hemsworth's third solo outing as Thor brought in $854 million against Justice League's $657.9 million at the worldwide box office. In the rivalry's latest head-to-head, 2019's matchup between Captain Marvel and Shazam!, which released a month apart, Marvel Studios did not break a sweat.
